Sergio Dangelo. Le altre facce della medaglia

Curated by Dominique Stella

  • Galleria Venti Correnti - Milan (Italy)
  • 18 May 2004 - 03 July 2004

On display some works on canvas, collages, pottery and documents illustrate the artistic career of Sergio Dangelo from 1962 to 2003.
The vast exposition curated by Dominique Stella is made up of 12 paintings “Le luci d’Isotta/The lights of Isotta” (1962-63), 118 collages “ironico-erotici/ironic-erotic” (1960-2003) and 40 “vasi atteggiati/postured vases” (2002).
All the paintings belong to the same series, painted between 1963 and 1964 on the theme of Isotta Guttadauro, inspired by the reading of the book by Gabriele Dannunzio. The poetic lyricism which prevails in this collection reminds us that Sergio Dangelo defines himself above all as “a scholar who writes”. His favorite form and fundamental component of his work is the ellipse, which is often the base from where the work develops.
The collages belong to various periods and starting from a poetic essence they often reach a derisive spirit reminding us that for Dangelo the work as an object doesn’t have any importance: he will never be carried away by a sort of obsession towards his own work. In this way the collage becomes a technique used to explore the mundane, extracting an anecdotic, curious and humorous aspect from objects, newspaper sheets and common things, which the artist exploits artistically. It is the disappearance of a neglected object and its resurrection, through an unconscious randomly guided combination of the collage.
