Richard Avedon, 1944 – 1994
“Richard Avedon, 1944 – 1994” at Palazzo Reale continues the series of great exhibitions organized by the Assessorato alla Cultura of the Council of Milan.
The first exhibition of 1995 is the great retrospective of one of the biggest artist-photographers of the century, thanks to an agreement between the Council of Milan and the Whitney Museum of American Art of New York.
Coming from New York and Cologne the exhibition will continue to London, at the National Gallery, and further on to the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Special thanks to Gianni Versace fashion house that secured the exhibition for Milan and for its connection: it presents a showroom, that Avendon created especially for the occasion, dedicated to the images.
The three sections of Richard Avendon’s exhibition unfolds in more than 2000sqm of the big Sala delle Cariatidi through the succession of refurbished spaces and some intentionally neglected rooms.
There are more than 600 historical photographs, organically set up by the artist himself with a unique result.
In collaboration with the laboratory of scenic design of the theatre Piccolo of Milan – Teatro d’Europa.
In the first part of the exhibition there is the record of fifty years of work by this famous photographer: portraits, fashion exposures, reportages, magazine covers, sketches, screen tests, snap-shots, a miscellaneous of famous characters and ordinary people, often the most underprivileged.
In the second part Richard Avedon describes his original way of presenting Fashion.
The third part is represented by Richard Avedon’s advertizing campaigns for Gianni Versace fashion house.
